Walks and legends

Around Aldein and Radein there are various legendary figures and many tales of events associated with them. The following walks will take you to some of the signs of this mystical past.
Special tip: In 2006 a book will be published with a collection of legends associated with the Aldein and Radein areas, compiled by children from the Aldein elementary school.

Aldein-Göllersee-Rotwand-Aldein

Category: easy
Starting point: the car park below the parish hall in the village centre
Walking time: ca. 3 hours
Difference in altitude: 150 m
Possibilities for refreshments: Inn zur Krone, Inn Ebner-Pfiffikus, Inn Pigleiderhof, Inn Schönblick, cafeteria Irene
Route: Follow the one-way street immediately below the Raiffeisenkasse bank. Soon you reach the main road. Cross this to the left and follow the sign 6 as far as the signpost that indicates Göllersee to the left. Follow this route and after about 200 m. you reach the "Pigleidermoos". This is a nature reserve, a marshy area with ponds, in which water lilies, reeds and various other marshland plants thrive, and in spring the frogs give a concert. The route marked "R" leads past the nature reserve over slabs of ground-down porphyry rock, down to the idyllic Göllersee, a small lake.
The route continues to the right of the lake, with the signs for route "S". soon you reach a small pond the "Mittersee" and immediately below it the "Bärenbad". In summer the "Mittersee" and the "Bärenbad" are both almost dried up. Here there is a sign pointing to the Rotwand. After about 15 minutes you reach this unique viewpoint over the Etsch Valley. Be careful by the Rotwand - the porphyry rock face falls steeply away here, but the view is amazing, and almost takes one’s breath away when an up-draught blows in your face.
You return from the Rotwand on the forest road and follow this for about 20 minutes. Then turn left and follow the path marked "O" up to the level of the "Pigleidermoos" as far as Pigleiderhof inn. Continue on the road and commercial route to Inn Schönblick and then on the main road back to the starting point.
If you bear left at the nature reserve you will in any case reach Inn Schönblick on the route marked "R".
Special tip: On the way to the Göllersee (after the high-voltage electricity lines on the right) you come to a large rock on a slope. This rock was called the witches’ stone and there is a strange story about it …

Weißhorn (2316 m) starting from Radein

Category: medium to difficult
Starting point: gravel car park right of the main road shortly before Oberradein.
Walking time: ca. 5 - 6 hours
Difference in altitude: 760 m
Possibilities for refreshments: Inn Nigglhof, Alpine hut Gurndin, Hotel Schwarzhorn, Inn Jochgrimm, Inn Roter Adler, Hotel Zirmer, Inn Rose, Hotel Berghofer
Route: From the car park walk further along the main road in the direction of Oberradein. At the fork go up to the right as far as Inn Nigglhof. From there follow footpath Nr. 7. when you reach the forest road, follow it uphill and after a short time turn right into route B – Blauweg – and follow it as far as the Alpine hut Gurndin. From here you make the ascent of the Weisshorn on route H. There is a splendid all-round view from the summit. The return route is via the path H to the Jochgrimm. (the painting on the Hotel Schwarzhorn shows the giant Grimm) and via the forest road to the Alpine hut Gurndin. Here bear right on the Knopfweg, or the Neuer Weg, to route Zirmersteig W at the Lahnerwiesen meadows, and over the chalk pits of the Bletterbach back to Radein.
Special tip: The legend of the giant Grimm who lived between the Weisshorn and the Schwarzhorn is depicted in five paintings by the famous South Tyrolean artist, Ignaz Stolz, in the large dining room of the Hotel Zirmer in Radein.

Winkl – Rosssprung

Category: easy
Starting point: car park Aldein village
Walking time: ca. 2.5 hours
Difference in altitude: 250 m
Possibilities for refreshments: Inn zur Krone, Inn Ebner-Pfiffikus
Route: From the centre of the village follow the signs T, past the mill to the chapel Maria Schnee im Thal (built around 1600), Continue to the Berghof Matznell, the birthplace of Andreas Alois Dipauli von Treuheim. From the farm Matznell turn left following the signs N and 6A as far as Rosssprung ( a wooded hill) and return via the same route. A romantic woodland route, without much walking uphill, through peaceful, unspoilt nature.
Special tip: The name Rosssprung derives from a legend. The Count of Burgstallegg had to flee from the rebellious Aldein farmers, and jumped with his horse from this spot across to Mitterberg – and since then this wooded hill has been called the "Rosssprung" or " horse’s leap".

Ruins of Karnol/Leiterburg – Auer

Category: easy to medium
Starting point: the car park by the fire brigade hall below the village centre of Aldein
Walking time: ca. 5 hours
Difference in altitude: 1000 m
Possibilities for refreshments: Restaurant Ploner, Inn Koflhof
Route: From the car park go right, past the sports facilities, via footpath 1 as far as the Karnolhof (the last farm south-west of Aldein). Above Karnol you will see a sign to "Gevatterstein". To the west, following the signs for 2, go past the farm to a small hill with the ruins of Karnol/Leiterburg. There are ruins and a splendid view. There is a descent via the so-called "Katzenleiter" or "cats ladder" (a stone way with 530 steps) past a waterfall as far as Auer. It is possible to return from Auer by bus.
Special tip: The Gevatterstein is a legendary spot. In a drunken brawl, the Ebner farmer is supposed to have pressed the Steinhauser farmer against a rock. The imprints are still clearly visible there to this day.
