Rambling from peak to peak

Starting from Aldein, it is possible to go rambling on the Weisshorn and Schwarzhorn peaks, without great difficulty or a lot of experience of the Alps. You just need to be sure-footed and have a head for heights. From the summits there is a magnificent all-round view of the Ortler range, the Ötztal Alps, the Schlern, the Rosengarten, the Latemar, the Zanggen, the Brenta range, and over the Etsch and Eisack valleys.
Special tip: The Weisshorn is white sarl dolomite, the Schwarzhorn is reddish-green Bozen quartz porphyry. The reason for the very different nature of the neighbouring peaks is the so-called "Trudner line", a fault in the earth’s crust. Along this fault line the Schwarzhorn was pushed up, over 1000 meters, relative to the Weisshorn. The strata lying on the porphyry were carried away. As a result, the porphyry reaches the same height today as the much younger sarl dolomite.

Jochgrimm – Schwarzhorn (2439 m)

Category: medium to difficult
Starting point: car park at Joch Grimm, approach via Lavazè Joch
Walking time: ca. 2.5 hours
Difference in altitude: 450 m.
Possibilities for refreshments: Hotel Schwarzhorn, Gasthaus Inn Jochgrimm
Route: From Joch Grimm you go between the Hotel Schwarzhorn and the Inn Jochgrimm, across marshy meadows, in a south-easterly direction. On the edge of beautiful, open stone-pine woods, one joins a well-marked path leading right. This crosses a small stream, and runs between different types of pine trees and fields of Alpine roses to the upper station of a ski-lift. From here one crosses grass scattered with scree to reach the rocky summit area, and climbing steeply over the easy rocks, you reach the highest point of the Schwarzhorn. The return journey is via the same route.
Special tip: To climb the Schwarzhorn requires a degree of sure-footedness in the area of the summit, but offers a more comprehensive view to the south and east, especially of the Pala range, than the neighbouring Weisshorn. The view of Cavalese, way below in the Fleims Valley, is especially beautiful.

Weisshorn (2316 m) starting from Aldein

Category: medium to difficult
Starting point: Inn Schlögler
Walking time: ca. 5 – 6 hours
Difference in altitude: 850 m
Possibilities for refreshments: Inn Schlögler, Alpine hut Lahner, Alpine hut Auerleger, Alpine hut Gurndin, Inn Joch Grimm, Hotel Schwarzhorn
Route: First go along the road in the direction of the alpine hut Lahner, then keeping to the forest road continue in the direction of Kösertal. On reaching it, there are three possibilities:
From Kösertal to the right on the Gamplsteig Nr.5, past crucifix. Here the climb via the north ridge to the top of the Weisshorn begins. The last section is very steep, but the magnificent view into the Bletterbach is worth the effort.
From Kösertal along the forest road and footpath Nr. 9 to Neuhütt. Keep following the forest path and the signs for Nr. 2 as far as Alpine hut Auerleger, and then further as far as Jochgrimm. From here take footpath H to ascend the Weisshorn.
From Kösertal follow path Nr.5 and 5a, and then from the signs for Nr.1 via Hoferwiese as far as Jochgrimm. Then take footpath H to ascend the Weisshorn.
The return route for all three variants is via footpath H to the Alpine hut Gurndin. Turn right by the Alm (Alpine meadow), taking footpath N - Neuer Weg - then later W – Zirmersteig. At the fork bear right again, following the Gorzsteig G, climb down into the Bletterbach, cross the gorge, and climb up again to the Alpine hut Lahner and continue on to the Alpine hut Schmieder. Here you follow footpath S, and later 2, and return again to the main road and the starting point.
Special tip: It is a special experience to climb the Weisshorn before dawn, and enjoy the sunrise up there.

Weisshorn (2316 m) starting from Radein

Category: medium to difficult
Starting point: gravel car park right of the main road shortly before Oberradein.
Walking time: ca. 4 ½ - 5 hours
Difference in altitude: 760 m
Possibilities for refreshments: Inn Nigglhof, Alpine hut Gurndin, Inn Roter Adler, Hotel Zirmer, Inn Rose, Hotel Berghofer
Route: From the car park first walk further along the road in the direction of Oberradein. At the fork go right up to Inn Nigglhof. From there take footpath Nr.7. When you reach the forest road, follow it upwards and after a short time turn right on to footpath B – Blauweg – and follow it as far as the Alpine hut Gurndin. From here the ascent of the Weisshorn starts on footpath H. There is a magnificent all-round view from the summit. Return via the lovely Zirmersteig, signposted W, first along the upper edge of the alpine meadows Lahner below the Weisshorn, then via the chalk pits of the Bletterbach back to Radein.
Special tip: In the geological museum of Radein there are display cases with scientifically-based, easily comprehensible explanations, which take the visitor through millions of years of the earth’s history, and show them the origins and geological evolution of the Dolomites. A vertical graphic display gives insight into the sequence of rock strata and sediment of the Bletterbach area, ranging from Bozen quartz porphyry to Gröden sandstone, Bellerophon and Werfen strata, and sarl dolomite.
