From alpine hut to alpine hut

Idyllically situated high Alpine pastures, known as Alms, sometimes with breathtaking views of the nearby mountain ranges, offer pleasant possibilities for delicious refreshments.

Aldeiner alpine hut ramble

Category: easy
Starting point: car park below the Alpine hut Lahner
Walking time: ca. 2 - 2.5 hours
Difference in altitude: 150 m
Possibilities for refreshments: Alpine hut Lahner, Alpine hut Schmieder, Alpine hut Schönrast
Route: A wide path leads from the car park to the Alpine hut Lahner (1583 m). Follow the signs for 3 and the signpost for Weissenstein up to the forest path, and then go a short distance along this to the woodland hollow, Kösertal (1696 m), and following the sign for Schönrast, turn left and up the wide path to the Alpine hut Schönrast (1699 m). From here follow the signs for route S on the forest path in a south-westerly direction to the Alpine hut Schmieder (1674 m). Soon afterwards turn left from the approach road and follow the signs for route G, descending gently to the Alpine hut Lahner and the car park.
Special tip: The car park charges a flat rate of 2,00 €. At the car park you will also find the Bletterbach Visitor Centre and the climb down into the Bletterbach – a gorge of great geological significance – also starts from here.

Maria Weissenstein – Aldeiner Alms – circular ramble

Category: moderately difficult
Starting point: car park by the place of pilgrimage, Maria Weissenstein
Walking time: ca. 6 hours
Difference in altitude: 400 m
Possibilities for refreshments: Alpine hut Auerleger, Alpine hut Schmieder, Alpine hut Schönrast
Route: From the pilgrimage place take the forest route Nr. 2 in the direction of Petersberger Leger to Neuhütt, and further to the Alpine hut Auerleger. On the footpath 509 go up to the Hoferwiese meadow, and from there follow footpath Nr. 1 back to join the forest road. Continue on this, following the signs for 5 or 5A in the direction of Kösertal. In the Kösertal take footpath S over the Rappenkanzel as far as the Alpine hut Schmieder. Continue further to the Alpine hut Schönrast and then back to the pilgrimage church of Maria Weissenstein.
Special tip: Maria Weissenstein is the most important place of pilgrimage in South Tyrol. Its history began in 1553 when a farmer, Leonhard Weissensteiner, found a holy statue of the Virgin. The "Leonhard hermitage" can be visited to this day – 20 minutes from the car park.

Weisshorn (2316 m) starting from Aldein

Category: medium to difficult
Starting point: Gasthaus Schlögler
Walking time: ca. 5 - 6 hours
Difference in altitude: 850 m
Possibilities for refreshments: Inn Schlögler, Alpine hut Lahner, Alpine hut Auerleger, Alpine hut Gurndin, Inn Joch Grimm, Hotel Schwarzhorn
Route: First go along the road in the direction of the Alpine hut Lahner, then keeping to the forest road continue in the direction of Kösertal. On reaching it, there are three possibilities:
From Kösertal to the right on the Gamplsteig Nr.5, past the crucifix. Here the climb via the north ridge to the top of the Weisshorn begins. The last section is very steep, but the magnificent view into the Bletterbach is worth the effort.
From Kösertal along the forest road and footpath Nr. 9 to Neuhütt. Keep following the forest path and the signs for Nr. 2 as far as Alpine hut Auerleger, and then further as far as Jochgrimm. From here take footpath H to ascend the Weisshorn.
From Kösertal follow path Nr.5 and 5a, and then from the signs for Nr.1 via Hoferwiese as far as Jochgrimm. Then take footpath H to ascend the Weisshorn.
The return route for all three variants is via footpath H to the Alpine hut Gurndin. Turn right by the Alm (Alpine meadow), taking footpath N - Neuer Weg - then later W – Zirmersteig. At the fork bear right again, following the Gorzsteig G, climb down into the Bletterbach, cross the gorge, and climb up again to the Alpine hut Lahner and continue on to the Alpine hut Schmieder. Here you follow footpaths S, and later 2, and return again to the road and the starting point.
Special tip: It is a special experience to climb the Weisshorn before dawn, and enjoy the sunrise up there.
