Special tip: the Weißhorn
and the Schwarzhorn

The Weisshorn is white sarl dolomite, the Schwarzhorn is reddish-green Bozen quartz porphyry.

The reason for the very different nature of the neighbouring peaks is the so-called "Trudner line", a fault in the earth’s crust. Along this fault line the Schwarzhorn was pushed up, over 1000 meters, relative to the Weisshorn. The strata lying on the porphyry were carried away. As a result, the porphyry reaches the same height today as the much younger sarl dolomite.
